BIOGRAPHY

Nick Canova grew up in the southeastern corner of CT. Growing up in close proximity to the shoreline with its marshes and coves had great impact on Nick both personally as well as artistically. Naturally, the colors, moods, and changes to his landscape led Nick to want to paint it. This desire was cultivated during his teenage years and continued as he went off to art school at the Maryland Institute College of Art as a painting major with intentions of teaching at the college level. But, just as the landscape’s appearance changes, so too Nick’s education changed as he chose to become a certified public school art educator.

After completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education at Southern Connecticut State University, Nick has spent the past 30 plus years helping to nurture the artistic talents of his students while also instilling in them the search for personal voice. As he did so, for his students, he also worked to do the same for himself. He never stopped painting or growing in his understanding of how his connection to the salt marshes impacted him and continues to do so daily. In fact, it is this sense of place, and how we each have our own, that has become a central theme to his oil painting. Nick paints mood. His conceptualized canvases are less about capturing a particular place and more about capturing a sense of place. He feels that the exchange between sense of place and individual offers much to be investigated.

Nick further developed himself as a professional art educator earning advanced degrees in both Art Education and Educational Leadership at Central Connecticut State University. Nick currently teaches art while also overseeing the K-12 Art Department for a school system in Central Connecticut.

Nick has had his work on display in galleries in Connecticut and his work is part of private collections across the country.

Nick lives in Connecticut with his wife, Angela. They have two daughters, Julia and Marisa.
